comment IPv6 simple home LAN server confiiguration
@StephenBoston Yes, but to make it persistent across reboots you will have to use some configuration mechanism defined by your distribution.

comment IPv6 simple home LAN server confiiguration
Add an additional, static address that has the same prefix as the expiring addresses, and a fixed host part. For example, if your prefix is 2001:db8:101:3a22/64, add the address 2001:db8:101:3a22::10 to the interface. If the prefix also changes with time, this method won't work.

comment Can't access some web sites on Arch
One thing that Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Google sites have in common is that they are all reachable over IPv6. Stack Overflow is not. Check your IPv4 connectivity.

comment Why would reading a passphrase from STDIN be disallowed but not from a PTY or argument?
I guess the creators of vault subscribe to the idea that a passphrase should be entered by a human, not a program. Storing a sensitive passphrase in a file just for the purpose of feeding it into another program is "security by obscurity", not real security. By trying to enforce that the passphrase is read from a terminal they are trying to ensure a human is typing it. Unfortunately, as you have shown, this can be circumvented. Accepting the passphrase via standard input would also make life easier for authors of malware, should the passphrase leak.

comment OpenSuse unbootable, grub uninstallable
That Grub wants a bios boot partition hints that it thinks the machine is booted in BIOS compatibility mode instead of UEFI. Is CSM enabled in the firmware setup?

comment Will adding data to a hdd that already has data on it using the “dd” command overwrite the pre-existing data?
@topencrypt If you have existing files on the target partition, then you will have to copy the individual files to the partition. You can of course create a tar or zip archive of the files, the contents of which you can then extract where you want.

comment How to SSH using only private key?
The public key may be included in the container along with the private key, in which case it is possible to extract it. It is not possible to generate the public key from its private counterpart.

comment How to SSH using only private key?
You say a private key was given to you, and only the private key was supplied. By whom? If the private key was given to you for the intent of using it to access the remote system, then I would assume the admin who delivered the the to you already has copied the public key to the server. There is no way to generate the public key from the private key you were given.

@topencrypt You will have to copy the data as files to the destination file system. That's the only way to preserve the integrity of the file system.

Short answer to the question in the subject: yes, if the of argument refers to a disk partition , the dd command will overwrite the existing data on the partition.

comment USB won't boot in UEFI mode on HP Elitebook
May I suggest not using Grub in the first place? Systemd-boot is so much simpler. See the Arch Linux wiki for instructions.

comment is it important to set system hardware clock from the system OS
According to Kusalananda's answer you apparently don't have to worry about this. The reason why the system hardware clock needs to to be updated in the first place, or if it is "important", is that the hardware clock is the only time source available when the machine is turned on. ntpd refuses to reset the clock if the clock has drifted too far off, which can easily happen if you don't regularly write the correct time to the RTC.

comment Host unreacheable from laptop but reacheable from desktop
All the signs are telling me the xps13 can't get the MAC address of the NAS using ARP. Which hints that the NAS can't be reached over Wi-fi at all. Can the desktop machine communicate with the NAS (using Wi-Fi)?

comment Configure eth1 as a router's gateway porty using systemd-networkd
"Gateway" should be assigned the address of a different host on the local network, that should work as the default gateway. This setting installs a default route in the routing table. The routing table is the central entity in a router; the interface used for sending a packet is determined by the routing table entries.
