Plugging in a USB UVC camera is being detected, but recognized as a keyboard, on a laptop running Fedora 34.

cheese does not see this camera as an input device, only the built-in webcam.

How can I get the camera to be detected correctly?

I have the same error and I've added a couple of ignores at the X11 configuration.

First, check the cam is listed as a keyboard with the command xinput list, then create a file called /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/00-fix-cam.conf (or any filename with the extension conf)

Inside add these lines:

To get the right vendor and product names, use the command lsub -vv and replace the values MatchVendor and MatchProduct accordingly (or even better use the command hwinfo --usb or the command udevadm info -a /dev/input/by-id/*)

If the identifier none does not work, try to use the identifiers system-keyboard, keyboard, libinput and catchall

Some names include an extra space at the end, try to also add it at the ignore configuration

Restart your X session and run the command xinput list to check if the cam is now excluded as a keyboard input.

IMPORTANT: Try to enable SSH and have a remote connection from another computer in case the new configuration breaks the X session and you lost console access.

NOTE: Also ensure the cam is activated (some have a physical button or a keyboard shortcut to activate it and deactivated)

    Thanks. Based on my lsusb -vv output above, I tried your config file with Vendor as "2b16" and Product as "6689". However xinput list still sees it as a keyboard. The good news is that because of your suggestion, I tested this camera in Cheese again, now in Fedora 36, and it now works!

Well, it is recognized as webcam in principle:

That it is also recognized as keyboard is nothing unusual if the camera has a key for "snapshots". The same happens for my camera.

So the question becomes why besides the initial recognition by uvcvideo, cheese is not able to find it. Are there any messages below the excerpt you posted related to uvc or video devices? Possibly error messages?

How many devices do you see with ls /dev/video*? Anything special if you do lsusb -vv for the camera?

  • I see four devices with ls /dev/video*, two of which disappear when the camera is unplugged. I edited the question with the output from lsusb -vv. I don't notice other messages or errors regarding the uvc camera in the system log. Is there another video program I should try other than cheese?

    You are correct, the camera is recognized, but not by cheese. I tested with camorama which does detect this camera. I also plugged in a USB webcam and it is detected (also as a keyboard) and recognized by cheese. So now the question is why cheese does not recognize this specific camera. I may make a separate question about that.

  • @JoãoPimentelFerreira if you have a different question, please open a different question. This question was about "camera is being detected, but recognized as a keyboard". Very likely your camera chip has the option for keys, though it's not used in your camera. You could blacklist the corresponding driver, but to answer this we need your dmesg and lsusb output.

    Update: the camera now just works in Cheese and Fedora 36! It is still recognized as a keyboard, although it does not have input buttons externally.
