On an old 32 bit system with an up-to-date Debian Buster I wanted to use a WiFi USB adapter. I bought this adapter based on a recommendation on this German Debian site. It can scan for networks but I cannot connect to any WPA2 network. The correct passphrase is given and still it asks for the password after trying to connect all the time. So maybe it is a wpa_supplicant issue. Here are a few details:

$ uname -a
Linux hostname 4.19.0-14-686 #1 SMP Debian 4.19.171-2 (2021-01-30) i686 GNU/Linux

$ lsusb
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 8087:0024 Intel Corp. Integrated Rate Matching Hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0bda:8172 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8191SU 802.11n WLAN Adapter <--- THIS
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 8087:0024 Intel Corp. Integrated Rate Matching Hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

So it is an RTL8191SU chipset which should work with the firmware-realtek package from Debian. I installed it. At first I tried to use the adapter with the installed wicd. This was not working correctly, so I switched to network-manager.

A few relevant parts of journalctl -ax:

The result of journalctl -axu NetworkManager before trying to connect:

Also, to let network-manager manage all connections, I edited my /etc/network/interfaces:

# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

source /etc/network/interfaces.d/*

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

There are no additional files in the included directory. I followed the advice from https://wiki.debian.org/WiFi/HowToUse and edited my /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf as follows:

[main]
plugins=ifupdown,keyfile

[ifupdown]
managed=false

[device]
wifi.scan-rand-mac-address=no

The maybe best bet is wpa_supplicant, here are more details before trying to connect:
