I'm trying to create a barebones bootable Linux DVD, currently I'm just expecting there to be a device on /dev/sda3 that has my rootfs but I was wondering if there was a way for me to initially set the DVD as the root filesystem but switch it later on in the boot process if a device exists or something.

I know of initramfs but I don't know how it switches from the temporary root to the real root and I'd like to avoid using RAM as I only have 32MB to work with.
