I've configured a pretty standard Arch Linux desktop environment, and every file type I've tried so far (MP4, PDF, PNG, etc) opens in Chromium unless I configure some other program to open it. This naturally prompts some questions:

  • Why Chromium? Does it override every single MIME handler when installing it?
  • How can I return the MIME handler setup to something more sensible? Do I need to reinstall all the relevant applications, such as VLC, Evince and Firefox?
