Speaking of Debian, that's what I use, there are quite a number of fonts files that are installed by texlive-fonts-extra, e.g., the number of Open Type font files is

$ dpkg -L texlive-fonts-extra | grep otf | wc -l
1364
$

but these fonts are unknown to fontconfig, e.g.,

$ dpkg -L texlive-fonts-extra | grep ComicNeue-Regular.otf
/usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/fonts/opentype/rozynski/comicneue/ComicNeue-Regular.otf
$ fc-list ComicNeue
$

I could copy/symlink some fonts to ~/.fonts/, but is it possible to instruct permanently fontconfig to parse the fonts installed by TeX Live?
