I opened a terminal and ran Xorg -configure, then I received error.

It seemed pretty clear that I need to run this command while the X server is not running, so I followed the solutions described in not able to create xorg.conf file and tried the following:

  • /etc/init.d/gdm3 stop To kill X, then open a tty and run Xorg -configure

  • While X server was running I ran Xorg :2 -configure to run the command from a different server.

Both of these solutions resulted in error message.

This

[ 929.795] (EE) /dev/dri/card0: failed to set DRM interface version 1.4: Permission denied

means X cannot access one of your graphics cards, for whatever reason. Check dmesg for further clues, also do a ll /dev/dri/.

Apparently then this leads to

Number of created screens does not match number of detected devices.
  Configuration failed.

as the sanity check for the automatically generated configuration fails, because it cannot access one of the cards and therefore can't create a configuration for it.

Options:

  • If the unused graphics card is an external card, and not built-in: remove it, create configuration without it, put card back in.
  • Debug what is causing the unused graphics card to fail
  • Write the xorg.conf by hand. Having it automatically generated as a starting point is nice, but not necessary.

If this is an XY question, and your X is "I want to get my second graphics card to work", and your Y is "I need an xorg.conf to do that, so I must automatically generate it", then your only option is to debug what causes the second card to fail, and never mind xorg.conf files.
