In the physical world in case two switches connected to each other with a cable, I can put a device in the middle, so all traffic would flow through that device.

Switch A <--------------------> Switch B
                   |
                   |
                   |
                   v
Switch A <--> Inline Device <--> Switch B

This device in inline because it gets the traffic and can drop/redirect/whatever due to certain rules.

Is there anything similar in the virtual world? How can it be achieved virtually?

For example,

  • I have 2 Docker networks. I want to have this inline process/container between them. Or
  • 2 networks in Openstack which I want to have an inline process/container/vm

Is there any simple trick to have it done?

  • brctl?
  • veth pair?
  • OVS ?
