I am running CentOS 8 as a VMWare Guest OS. I have been using it for some time. Today I rebooted the machine, but it is going to Dracut resuce mode. It is not able to activate the OS LVMs.

How can I fix this error?

Update 1:

It goes to Darcut shell, I have to run these two command and exit the shell.

lvm vgscan
lvm vgchange -ay

then the server boots. I am not sure why LVM is not getting activated during boot.

Booting from old kernel also has same issue, here is the rdsosreport lines.

  • That happened after any system/kernel updates? If yes, can you choose the former kernel version in the grub menu instead and see if you can boot the VM? – Nuno Dio Jan 9 '20 at 19:42
  • yes, I did dnf upgrade command. but now I am getting same in old kernel also. let me update some more info to the post. – sfgroups Jan 9 '20 at 21:54

Two thinkgs to resolve this issue.

  1. CentOS 7 has centos as vg name, in CentOS 8, vg name is cl, I need to update the vg name in GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX entry in cat /etc/default/grub file.
  2. For UFI boot need to run this command grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/efi/EFI/centos/grub.cfg

This command helped me to grub2-editenv list display the boot arguments

Thanks
