I need a wlan driver (ATH10K_SDIO) in a device which is currently running Kernel Version 4.14 where only an experimental, non-functioning version of this driver is available. Upgrading the kernel is not really an option.

I tried backporting drivers from the Linux Kernel v4.19 to Linux Kernel v4.14. I used the backports repo branch linux-4.19.y to backport and integrate the drivers into the older kernel source tree. This failed due the patch 0090-remove-GRO_CONSUMED.patch.

Even when I removed this patch from the patch list the backporting still failed ( It could not patch the integration patch into the source tree ).

All this made me wonder, is this how you are to use the driver backport tool. If so, what am I missing?

Thanks

Johannes

Edit: The device I need the driver for is using https://github.com/Xilinx/linux-xlnx (Version 2018.2) which has hundreds of changes on top of Linux 4.14 so using Linux Stable is not really an option. But the error described above also happens when using 4.14.0 exactly.

ATH10K_SDIO support is in the latest 4.14 update, so simply updating to a more recent 4.14 kernel version should give you the driver. I recommend updating the whole kernel and porting over the distro-specific patches you have.

Reference: kernel.org https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git/tree/drivers/net/wireless/ath/ath10k?h=linux-4.14.y

You should be able to forward port your current kernel changeset (be it yours or someone else's) into this using a GitHub fork.

  • Thanks for your quick response. Yes that would usually be the best option but I am using github.com/Xilinx/linux-xlnx (Version 2018.2). Sorry for not specifying that. They spent the last 12 years adding hundreds of downstream changes so rebasing those on top of the stable branch is quite difficult.

  • In that case, it's better to diff out the patches from that branch, and copy them over to the new version. GitHub can even handle the patching process for this, identifying where any code conflicts are that you need to hand merge. This is what I meant by "distro-specific changes" Sometimes people do use a different kernel distro, from their Linux distro. Dec 15, 2019 at 12:19
  • I added the info in the above comment to my answer to provide a more complete solution. Dec 15, 2019 at 12:23
