I compiled the new kernel today and when reinstalling my DKMS modules vboxhost-6.0.12_OSE failed with this error.

Here is the origin of the package

I've been using this module since kernel 5.1.9 and have had no issues until now.

Output of

# dkms install vboxhost/6.0.12_OSE
Kernel preparation unnecessary for this kernel. Skipping...

make -j8 KERNELRELEASE=5.3.0gee -C /usr/lib/modules/5.3.0gee/build M=/var/lib/dkms/vboxhost/6.0.12_OSE/build.....(bad exit status: 2)
Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 5.3.0gee (x86_64)
Consult /var/lib/dkms/vboxhost/6.0.12_OSE/build/make.log for more information.

Any help on how to fix this would be appreciated, I can provide more logs that I haven't thought to provide if requested.

compatibility issues are common with out-of-tree kernel modules when new kernel versions are released. you'll have to wait until a patch is released for the virtualbox modules so that they compile against kernel 5.3. – cas Sep 17 '19 at 4:32

or use kvm (and virt-manager for a GUI) instead of virtualbox. – cas Sep 17 '19 at 4:34
  • The new kernel module 6.0.12-2 fixed this issue, I answered my own post but it was deleted. – H Graham Sep 17 '19 at 14:54
  • odd. saying that upgrading to the newer version of the module fixed the problem sounds like an answer to me. – cas Sep 17 '19 at 15:53
