I'm running a port scanner, and I don't want to scan all of the ports, if the target host is down. I'm running this host scanner in a loop in bash and I would like to kill it, if it's reporting to me that this host is down (stderr). Otherwise it's writing to the stdout, and I would like to pipe that output, but just if the stderr is unwritten. How can I decide that?
