Whenever I set up eno1 as a NetworkManager unmanaged interface via /etc/network/interfaces.d/eno1, I can no longer connect to my foobar vpn that is configured in NetworkManager.

If I click on foobar via NetworkManager to start it, nothing happens; no lines are logged in /var/lib/*.

The only way I can get my vpn to work is if I don't configure eno1 in interfaces.d

How can I achieve having eno1 managed via interfaces.d and having my vpn managed by NetworkManager?

These are two different connections, and apart from a bug, I don't see why this configuration wouldn't work.

# Contents of /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf
[main]
plugins=ifupdown,keyfile

[ifupdown]
managed=false
