I am running pxz with -v option, to "show progress" according to the man page. I am getting as output a sequence of seemingly random numbers, like:

0 1 7 3 2 5 8 4 9 6 6 9 5 0 1 2 3 8 7 4 ...

It seems to me that it has to do with the thread number which finishes a chunk of data, but I have not seen it explained anywhere.

What is the meaning of these numbers, and how can i estimate the progress (%) from this output?

  • I'm not sure how useful pxz is as xz can also use multiple threads -T and provided you are compressing a file, not stdin, will show progress as a %. – meuh Jun 17 at 8:52
