This question already has an answer here:

I have a question regarding the pipe operator ("|"). How does bash connect the output of one command or process to the input of another? Is it using the pipe system call or some other way? A sample program using system calls would be very helpful. Thanks a lot!

The source code for bash is available on gnu.org/software/bash. – nohillside Apr 30 at 20:19
  • I did a blog in it ctrlaltdelor.wordpress.com/2009/06/23/… I may create a new version in python (some time, maybe). I have done it in a live demo, so would be just a matter of pasting the code in. – ctrl-alt-delor Apr 30 at 21:47
  • Hi, your question is really a dupe (it was asked already here), but it is useful. Feel free to ask another thing, closure as duplicate is not bad. – peterh Apr 30 at 22:10
