I have a script parsing the output of last on several OpenSuse Leap machines.

Everything is right except on one, and the reason is that on that machine the output is missing the column where the display is shown (it's the 3rd).

For example, on other machines I may have ":0" for users that logged graphically, but not on this one.

utmpdump similarly is missing that column (the 6th, in this case).

I rely on the display for sending messages to the user.

Do you have any idea? Is there some configuration somewhere which is preventing the display from being saved in /var/log/wtmp?

  • Ok I managed to get physically to the machine and I discovered what happened. There was no display because there was no X server: the machine was running Wayland. – Miagu Apr 15 at 19:49
