When I try to run history in dash, I get an error message. This is expected as far as I can tell.

When I run fc I too get an error message like "dash fc: not found".

So how do I access the command history in dash? If it matters, I'm accessing dash through bash.

$ ps
  PID TTY          TIME CMD
  534 pts/2    00:00:00 bash
16129 pts/2    00:00:00 sh
16260 pts/2    00:00:00 ps

This seems to explain the problem, but not how to solve it.

  • "how to solve it" would be to obtain a version of dash for your distribution that is compiled with history support I think - or build one yourself from the source (e.g. using ./configure --with-libedit) – steeldriver Mar 27 at 12:36
