I have two instances of RHEL (6.2 and 6.5) both using the same versions of OpenSSL and OpenSSH (albeit different versions).

Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 6.2

# yum info openssl
Installed Packages
Name : openssl
Arch : x86_64
Version : 1.0.1e
Release : 48.el6_8.1

# yum info openssh
Installed Packages
Name : openssh
Arch : x86_64
Version : 5.3p1
Release : 118.1.el6_8

# openssl version
OpenSSL 1.0.1e-fips 11 Feb 2013

# telnet 0 22
Trying 0.0.0.0...

Escape character is '^]'.
SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_5.3

Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 6.5

# yum info openssl
Installed Packages
Name : openssl
Arch : x86_64
Version : 1.0.1e
Release : 15.el6

# yum info openssh
Installed Packages
Name : openssh
Arch : x86_64
Version : 5.3p1
Release : 94.el6

# openssl version
OpenSSL 1.0.1e-fips 11 Feb 2013

# telnet 0 22
Trying 0.0.0.0...
Connected to 0.
Escape character is '^]'.
SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_5.3

However the output from:

# openssl ciphers

Seems to be different on both servers. The server running 6.5 seems to have more ciphers. I'm not sure whether this is the expected result or if I should see identical output from both.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 6.2

# openssl ciphers ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384:ECDHE-ECDSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384:ECDHE-RSA-AES256-SHA384:ECDHE-ECDSA-AES256-SHA384:ECDHE-RSA-AES256-SHA:ECDHE-ECDSA-AES256-SHA:DHE-DSS-AES256-GCM-SHA384:DHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384:DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA256:DHE-DSS-AES256-SHA256:DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA:DHE-DSS-AES256-SHA:DHE-RSA-CAMELLIA256-SHA:DHE-DSS-CAMELLIA256-SHA:ECDH-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384:ECDH-ECDSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384:ECDH-RSA-AES256-SHA384:ECDH-ECDSA-AES256-SHA384:ECDH-RSA-AES256-SHA:ECDH-ECDSA-AES256-SHA:AES256-GCM-SHA384:AES256-SHA256:AES256-SHA:CAMELLIA256-SHA:PSK-AES256-CBC-SHA:ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256:ECDHE-ECDSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256:ECDHE-RSA-AES128-SHA256:ECDHE-ECDSA-AES128-SHA256:ECDHE-RSA-AES128-SHA:ECDHE-ECDSA-AES128-SHA:DHE-DSS-AES128-GCM-SHA256:DHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256:DHE-RSA-AES128-SHA256:DHE-DSS-AES128-SHA256:DHE-RSA-AES128-SHA:DHE-DSS-AES128-SHA:ECDHE-RSA-DES-CBC3-SHA:ECDHE-ECDSA-DES-CBC3-SHA:DHE-RSA-SEED-SHA:DHE-DSS-SEED-SHA:DHE-RSA-CAMELLIA128-SHA:DHE-DSS-CAMELLIA128-SHA:EDH-RSA-DES-CBC3-SHA:EDH-DSS-DES-CBC3-SHA:ECDH-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256:ECDH-ECDSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256:ECDH-RSA-AES128-SHA256:ECDH-ECDSA-AES128-SHA256:ECDH-RSA-AES128-SHA:ECDH-ECDSA-AES128-SHA:ECDH-RSA-DES-CBC3-SHA:ECDH-ECDSA-DES-CBC3-SHA:AES128-GCM-SHA256:AES128-SHA256:AES128-SHA:SEED-SHA:CAMELLIA128-SHA:DES-CBC3-SHA:IDEA-CBC-SHA:PSK-AES128-CBC-SHA:PSK-3DES-EDE-CBC-SHA:KRB5-IDEA-CBC-SHA:KRB5-DES-CBC3-SHA:KRB5-IDEA-CBC-MD5:KRB5-DES-CBC3-MD5:ECDHE-RSA-RC4-SHA:ECDHE-ECDSA-RC4-SHA:ECDH-RSA-RC4-SHA:ECDH-ECDSA-RC4-SHA:RC4-SHA:RC4-MD5:PSK-RC4-SHA:KRB5-RC4-SHA:KRB5-RC4-MD5

  • They aren't the same and neither are the minor release versions. The output shows that. Is there some reason that you need 6.5 and 6.2? Why not just update them both to 6.10 which is the current minor version and then yum update? – Nasir Riley Mar 12 at 21:30
  • Apologies . I meant the same versions (openssl version 1.0.1e & openssh version 5.3p1) but different releases. I'm not in a position to update both servers unfortunately. – user2090974 Mar 12 at 21:35
