Problem:

After a restart my Ubuntu Server 18.04 installation greets me as usual with the tty1 login prompt. The input of the username works as usual but after hitting enter the password prompt is skipped and a newline is printed without hitting enter. This repeats until the timeout is reached and the tty resets to the initial screen.

Idea:

I first though it could be a problem with my keyboard but after the timeout the tty resets to the initial prompt stopping the newline so no hanging enter key. As a test I replaced /bin/login with a simple script showing that the LF is send about once a second in an infinite loop.
