I'm installing RRDtool on fedora 29 . I've installed only 2-3 times without dnf and I'm not sure I have done it correctly. So the question (not only about this package but at all) : where to download the .tar file and create the build dir and where to install it. As far as i know installation dir is /usr/local and it's by default and i must not point it . I've read the fedora docs, and about filesystem hierarchy but only says navigate to download dir and ./configure make install.

It's unclear what you're asking for. Installing packages from source usually depends on the packages themselves, their build systems, languages they're written in and their dependencies. Also, why do you want to install a package from source? Particularly on a distro like Fedora 29 which contains pretty recent versions of most packages... You should explain why you want to do this in your question, so you get something meaningful in return. – filbranden Nov 3 '18 at 16:17
  • There are conventions such as installing under /usr/local or under /opt (in a subdirectory named after the package) and possibly others too. It really depends on what you're trying to accomplish. Without knowing which problem you're trying to solve by installing from source, it's hard to tell you something specific. The best advice I can give you is to use the distro packages if they're available, especially in a recent modern distro such as Fedora 29. – filbranden Nov 3 '18 at 16:39
  • I wanted to clear out where source packages are being installed . libraries are being installed in /lib other other things are installed in /usr/local, C headers in /usr/lib and /usr/include .correct me if I'm wrong . The questin was do I need to make installation and download folder explicitly or this thing are handled by the installer . I gave RRDtool as an example because the documentation says BUILD_DIR = /tmp/rrbuild INSTALL_DIR =/opt/rrdtoo – Angel Nov 3 '18 at 17:03
