An internal optical drive sometimes ceases to work on an external SATA adapter, connected via USB.

If I connect it, it sometimes freezes forever (until powered off).

What is a Linux command that does nothing but check if the device is still responsive? (something like ping /dev/sr3).

The Ping command, of course, does not work for local devices.
