On my CentOS 7 machine I have Firefox installed via Nix (the Firefox in the official repos isn't starting for me, so this is my workaround), the problem is its launcher doesn't appear in application menus. I know how to find a launcher for it, in my file system, namely by going to $HOME/.nix-profile/share/applications, and I know how to launch it at the command-line, but I'd like an application shortcut to appear in GNOME application menu.

Is this possible? I've tried setting $XDG_DATA_DIRS to include $HOME/.nix-profile/share, for my present user, but that doesn't seem to work.
