on two different machines, thinkpad x200 with legacy bios, and hp with EFI support, using parted for partitioning HDD from live boot (ubuntu, and arch), most of time, parted fails, and i don't seem to notice what is going wrong, here are my commands

parted

mktable gpt

mkpart [pirmary] ext4 start_placeholder end_placeholder

set 1 esp on

note! [primary] means i tried both scenarios, using parted interractive cli doesn't help as well.

Your question is very unclear. Show parted -l after parted, and after gdisk? ext4 and esp don't go together but that's not an error until you actually put ext4 on it... parted doesn't create filesystems. – frostschutz Sep 14 '18 at 11:46
  • yes, this is my mistake, i used mkfs, after gdisk, but didn't use it with parted, mkpart in parted has optional FS-TYPE, so i though it create argument filesystem, but in the man page, it say it doesn't in the last line in mkpart, thanks, i needed to use mkfs afterwards, i just forgot – Error Sep 14 '18 at 12:25
  • the Question title is misleading as well, but it's part of the misunderstanding. – Error Sep 14 '18 at 12:27
