If I enter the xinput list command into a terminal I get the following output.

Virtual core pointer id=2
  Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4
  Synaptics TM3096-006 id=11
  SynPS/2 Synaptics Touchpad id=15

I then run the command xinput --disable 15 followed by xinput list. The output again is this (identical to the original).

Virtual core pointer id=2
  Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4
  Synaptics TM3096-006 id=11
  SynPS/2 Synaptics Touchpad id=15

Why isn't SynPS/2 Synaptics Touchpad removed from the list?

I'd like to permanently remove SynPS/2 Synaptics Touchpad, but I can't even temporarily disable it at this point. I don't need two instances of trackpad drivers running, Synaptics TM3096-006 and SynPS/2 Synaptics Touchpad and it makes my cursor jump around the screen uncontrollably.

  • I ended up using sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-input-synaptics to fix the problem, although not a direct answer to the question. – stackinator Sep 24 '18 at 13:48
