This source says to check if $COLORTERM contains 24bit or truecolor.

sh

[ "$COLORTERM" = truecolor ] || [ "$COLORTERM" = 24bit ]

bash / zsh:

[[ $COLORTERM =~ ^(truecolor|24bit)$ ]]
