So this is a area I don't clearly understand (adding ip addresses, hostnames and mapping etc...). In the guide for oracle database installation here, it is mentioned that adding a qualified name for the server in the following format in /etc/hosts file.

127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain localhost4 localhost4.localdomain4
192.168.0.215 ol7.localdomain ol7

and setting the correct hostname in /etc/hostname like follows

ol7.localdomain

127.0.0.1 line is already there. my problem is, how to add the 2nd line. I know how to add it to hosts, but how can I select an ip address like 192.168.0.215. How can I determine what can I put there. Is it just any ip or something we have to find.

Then can I use that ip/hostname to ping or connect through putty to my linux server?
