I want to install GRUB to my USB and use that to boot into Linux. What is the way or How to do that ?.

My system is UEFI also supports legacy boot (only one at a time). I have seen a duplicate post with my same question. I don't know how to do that. The OS I want to install is Kali Linux 2018.1.I already installed it but I didn't install GRUB. I tried adding the boot entry by EasyBCD but since Windows is Installed in UEFI mode I cant do it. Now I can only use Linux Live boot because Windows is lagging my Laptop very much. I have tried installing boot loader into my pen drive but it didn't work or I did a mistake.

My Question is the same as on this post -Can I install linux on my HDD and GRUB on a thumb drive? but I dont know how to do that. :(

Please Help.......

  • Could you please clarify what you mean by install GRUB on to your USB? Do you have a partition on your hard drive with a Linux install and wish to use the flash drive as your boot partition? Do you have a Kali Linux Live Boot Flash Drive set up and wish to use it with persistence? Or do you wish to install Linux onto a flash drive? Please read this. I would also recommend you read this. If you cannot clarify your usage or have problems doing this, I do not recommend you use Kali. – kemotep May 2 '18 at 14:47
  • sudo grub-install /dev/sdb && sudo update-grub. Use fdisk -l to see the name of your USB. – defalt May 12 '18 at 13:30
  • I meant installing the boot files into the flash drive. I already have installed Kali Linux in the HDD. I tried to install grub to USB but it's not booting. Sorry for the late reply. – Icosagon May 14 '18 at 9:21
