I have a Linux mint 18.1.
This is uname-a output.
Linux workstation 4.4.0-121-generic #145-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 13 13:47:23 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

When I shutdown, these are the last few lines it shows before it hangs.
terminal status before hanging

If I press Cntl+Alt+Del a few times (7 times within 2 seconds), then it goes in for a restart. Also, if I run init6 from within the terminal, it restarts without any problems.

When I checked the forums, I found that

  1. Trying shutdown -P now - would work. But I wanted this to work the way it did before from the GUI interface and not from command line
  2. GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" acpi=force apm=power_off - In this setting acpi=force apm=power_off is supposed to do the trick by modifiying /etc/grub/default.
  3. After step 2 I did update apm power_off=1 within the /etc/modules and update-grub from terminal for no avail.

What's going wrong and what am I missing?
