My ear-bud volume is almost always too quiet even though the master volume is at max. I've never got pulse-audio to work on this machine, so I'm stuck with alsa. Various suggestions found on the internet advise importing some code into /etc/asound.conf that is supposed to add a pre-amp slider, but everything I've tried only succeeds in disabling sound entirely. Is there a reliable method?

And of course you already tried text mode alsamixer for your audio interface to set master and other volumes? – ajeh Apr 24 '18 at 18:22
  • Yes, none of the standard tools show anything different, it seems one needs to dig deeper. '/var/lib/alsa/asound.state' shows some values which look like they might be changeable, but so far I know of now way to change them. This 'pre-amp' idea seems to be the most popular, but it doesn't work here. – Ray Andrews Apr 25 '18 at 0:56
  • Please edit question with output of cat /proc/asound/cards and amixer -c 42 contents, where 42 is the number of the relevant card from the previous command. This will show which kind of soundcard you have, and all amps and pre-amps ALSA recognizes. If the output is too long, put it into a pastebin etc. – dirkt Apr 25 '18 at 7:15
  • And also uname -a please, as no one has any idea what Linux you are on. – ajeh Apr 25 '18 at 14:14
