During a longer session I encountered that after a user change I could no longer start a bunch of programs neither from console nor via start menu. (including Firefox, Chromium, Google-Chrome, Thunderbird, xreader, xed, xplayer, Users+Groups,...)

Starting from console I got an (almost) immediate prompt without any output and the app was not visible via top. Letting the program print its version still worked.

I used apt-cache to check for common dependencies and libgtk-3-0 is the only package (seemingly) every failing program depends on but the working ones don't.

A few programs that worked were (Midori, okular, kile, MATE Terminal, libreoffice, dropbox and seemingly everything working on the console).

I newly installed gedit, which depends on gtk3 and it failed too. I started them as super user and they failed too. I have tested for 3 diffrent users on MATE and awesome wm. I have reinstalled the package. It has no unmet dependencies.

When the failure first occured I did a shutdown because I thought this might be a user issue - only firefox and thunderbird were found then. On the user already running some time the system was very slow, there was no graphical output for the concerned programs (firefox, thunderbird, xreader) as far as I remember, but the processes didn't die immediately but had to be killed.

How do I get this fixed apart from setting up a new os?

  • Do you get any warning or error messages when you try to run that applications from terminal? What is the ouput of dpkg -l | grep libgtk? – ceccoemi Mar 29 '18 at 8:19
