We have an HaProxy setup in our company, and this works with SSL (certbot / crt-list.txt). We want an automated task that reads the file crt-list.txt and takes out the Domain Name as a variable. What we will do with this variable? The variable is needed for requesting automated Certificate renewal. HaProxy needs an specific PEM file for this, so we can't use the auto renewal from certbot.

The text file is in this Format

/etc/haproxy/certs/domainname.pem www.domainname.de
/etc/haproxy/certs/domainname2.pem domainname2.de
/etc/haproxy/certs/domainname3.pem www.domainname3.com

with multiple lines.

The script should read each line, and extract the Domainname in the 2nd column and create a variable named $Domain. This $Domain Variable is used for the autorenewal feature, so it can go line by line and renews the Certificate for every known Domain in crt-list.txt

I'm new to shell Programming, so how we can realize this? I've already created a script for Certificate request and transformation into .pem files. That was simple, but this script is a little bit complicated for me because I'm not familiar in variables and so on.

The original script is like this:

#!/bin/bash
#Script for Certificate Creation & Renewal v1.2
#Written by Nicolay Braetter - VRS Media

#Frage nach dem Domainnamen

while read X Domain
do
  echo $Domain | gencertreq
done < crt-list.txt

gencertreq is your script.

  • And This little Part reads it line by Line, and creates for every Domain an new request !? Commented Jan 23, 2018 at 14:40
  • It does. Do you want one call for all the domains? Commented Jan 23, 2018 at 14:42
  • Yes. One Call. It should work later on in an Cronjob for automatic renewal. I will add above the original script. Just a moment. Commented Jan 23, 2018 at 14:43
  • How does your script accept multiple domains? Read input or commandline parameters? Commented Jan 23, 2018 at 14:44
  • Your script can only handle one domain, but reads input. I'll change mine. So it's not "One Call", your script needs to be called for each domain. My script performs the loop. Commented Jan 23, 2018 at 14:48
