I have an instance on OpenStack installed with CentOS-7-x86_64 that is accessed using putty, the pem file which was converted to ppk file using the puttygen, worked fine and provided passwordless access to the machine using putty with the default username "centos" but recently has stopped working with this username. The key still works for the root user.I tried copying the public key again in the authorized_keys but that turned out to be not fruitful either. Question:

  1. Is this the issue with the keypair file.
  2. Have the username ssh files been modified in some way
  3. is this issue resolvable.

I am open to provide any information that may be required to understand this.

Try to connect to the instance with ssh -vv user@host and post the relevant lines

  • @baselab Hi Sir, i tried using ssh -vv centos@master, but it still asks for the password which i originally didnt have. (i have made a workaround by modifying the password for centos as i had the access to root). I still do not understand why the .pem file which earlier worked with user centos perfectly, has suddenly stopped working. Jan 12, 2018 at 4:22

Both your .ssh directory and the authorized_keys file are world-writable. This is clearly a bad idea, so OpenSSH will ignore them. See this Stack Overflow question for more, but I'd be a little concerned at how this happened unless you know you did this.

  • Hi Sir, thanks for noticing but these were made so on purpose at the time i was trying to solve the issue. Jan 13, 2018 at 3:13
