10

I'm running Debian Testing (Last updated 31/10/2017) and when I play a video in full screen through a browser from either Twitch or iView it hangs the GPU, so the GUI is all frozen.

The computer I have is an 'Up Squared' with an Intel 505HD.

The kernel is still running though, as I can still access it via ssh.

I'm running kernel 4.12

Linux BB-8 4.12.0-0.bpo.2-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.12.13-1~bpo9+1 (2017-09-28) x86_64 GNU/Linux

I'm also using a work around for video tearing in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Intel Graphics"
    Driver "intel"
    Option "TearFree" "true"
End

Error message (dmesg output);

This is pretty easy to replicate and can be done by loading twitch in fullscreen and after about 5minutes it will hang. Sometimes at the start and sometimes a little way through.

How can I fix this?

Update

I updated the kernel to 4.13 which didn't help the problem.

I then removed the TearFree option. This did help I believe, but then I have tearing.

** Error ** Here is a slightly different error but still the same result being it's frozen GUI screen and have to do the Magic Keys to reboot.

Please do as root:

  1. EDIT /etc/default/grub
  2. Find the line that starts with GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX and append i915.enable_rc6=0, giving you for example: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="splash quiet i915.enable_rc6=0"
  3. EXECUTE: update-grub
  4. REBOOT
  5. (optional step) EXECUTE systool -m i915 -av | grep enable_rc6 to check whether you have set this option correctly

Thanks so much. This has fixed the problem. I've tried to crash the computer for 11 days now and it keeps going!

+1 -- This seems to have worked for me on my Dell XPS 13 9360 running Kubuntu 18.04 LTS; can't get it to crash for a few days now. Thank you!

enable_rc6 has been deprecated. Commented Mar 30, 2020 at 13:05
  • @David Tamar yes, it is deprecated now (2020)... that workaround is for older kernels.

I have Jumper Ezbook3 Pro, Linux Mint 18.3 and had similar errors: i915 0000:00:02.0: Resetting bcs0 after gpu hang

In my case, such errors happened when i launched graphically intensive tasks like OBS studio. As a result on gpu hang, Xorg would freeze for a second every 10-20 seconds. I noticed, that it only happened when laptop was running on battery power.

So in my case it must be a faulty battery, that cant supply enough juice to fully loaded cpu and gpu.
