I have bought TL-WN727N to use it like AP because this page said it supports this mode: https://wikidevi.com/wiki/Mt7601u. I forgot to read the fine print. The driver installed with Linux kernel only supports STA mode. There are several versions of that driver (in github) modified to support AP mode but none compile with the > 4.12 kernel.
Does anyone know a driver that works in AP mode and compiles well with recent kernels?

  • What is the output of lsusb and iw list | grep -A12 "Supported interface modes"? – GAD3R Oct 14 '17 at 11:09
  • The supported interface modes doesn't show "AP" but the device supports it. It's the kernel drive that doesn't support it. – Juan Simón Oct 15 '17 at 18:16
  • From the output of iw list the AP mode isn't supported. Try to compile the driver from github.com/eywalink/mt7601u , Make change under /etc/Wireless/RT2870AP/RT2870AP.dat here github.com/eywalink/mt7601u/commit/… By modifying the SSID and The PASSWORD of your AP., it is the only driver that seem to supporte AP mode – GAD3R Oct 15 '17 at 18:55

@GAD3R like I said, the module driver in stock kernel doesn't support that mode but the hardware does. There are several modifications of that driver in github to support AP mode but no one compile with the > 4.12 kernel. – Juan Simón Oct 17 '17 at 11:05
  • What error messages do you get while compiling the source code? – M. Sadeq H. E. Oct 17 '17 at 16:00
