Whenever I try to use apt to install or upgrade and also when I try to launch Synaptic Package Manager I get an error that says:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.

Then when I run the command It stalls always at:

$ sudo dpkg --configure -a

When trying to install updates from update manager I receive this error also

  • One option would be to run strace on the command to see what it is doing and where it got stuck. strace dpkg --configure -a as root would work, I think. I'm not sure about using sudo. – Faheem Mitha Sep 4 '17 at 4:16
  • Just add the end of the output - say the last 20 lines. The question you have is why the command stalls, right? That would show exactly where it stalled. And you're saying the result changed? That's odd. Please paste the new results in the question, not in the comment. Never post information in comments. – Faheem Mitha Sep 4 '17 at 5:54
  • Sigh. Again, please put all results in the question, not in comments. Please. – Faheem Mitha Sep 4 '17 at 6:46
  • It's saying '/etc/udev/udev.conf' does not exist. Very peculiar. Please post the output of dpkg -C in the question. Thanks. – Faheem Mitha Sep 4 '17 at 6:48
  • And you need to run strace dpkg --configure -a as root, not as user. If you don't, of course it will exit with a permission error. – Faheem Mitha Sep 4 '17 at 6:49

This may be related to a high I/O usage preventing sync bug and some suggest to unmount all but essential drives, other to replace /bin/sync by /bin/ls during the update.
