I'm going through a problem similar to this one in GNS3 server.

It starts with software-properties-common down to python3-pycurl which it says is not installable and can't find with apt-cache search.

gns3@gns3vm:~$ uname -a
Linux gns3vm 4.4.0-31-generic #50~14.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 13 01:07:32 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

  • Does apt-get update && apt-get upgrade solve this? Note that apt-get upgrade doesn't take arguments, it upgrades all packages. To install a package, use apt-get install software-properties-common. – Gilles Aug 5 '17 at 23:30
  • @Gilles, no success. I did "apt-get update" and "apt-get upgrade" separate still didn't go through. When I did sudo apt-get update && apt-get upgrade I got error: Fetched 205 kB in 9s (21.6 kB/s) Reading package lists... Done W: GPG error: http://archive.ubuntu.com trusty Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 16126D3A3E5C1192 E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied) E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root? – Mario Aug 7 '17 at 13:30
  • All of these commands needs to be run as root (i.e. with sudo in front). – Gilles Aug 7 '17 at 13:40
  • Yes. Did them all with sudo. They won't go through without – Mario Aug 8 '17 at 14:58
