As per this answer, I performed a series of prerequisite setups to be ready to pip install python3 packages.

However, when I ran

python3 -m pip install psycopg2

I got the following error:

The summary is, I suppose: error: command 'gcc' failed with exit status 1

What else could I be missing on my system to enable an installation of psycopg2?

For Ubuntu use

sudo apt install libpq-dev

  • YESSSSS!! I suppose the error message for the missing library header should have been enough to have made an educated guess - but it's a lot easier (/lazier) to get confirmation by finding an exact SOF answer match Apr 25, 2021 at 15:20

I was missing libpq-fe.h, which I obtained by installing postgresql-devel

sudo yum install postgresql-devel

  • Thanks yum install python-devel postgresql-devel worked for me

Run below command it will give you to use of psycopg2

pip install psycopg2-binary

For Linux Ubuntu (or other Debian)

sudo apt-get install python3-dev

or for CENTOS (RHEL) (or in my case Amazon Linux 2)

sudo yum install python3-dev

ALso, I found similar answers everywhere, difference being instead of python-dev and installing python3-dev would result into solving my problem.

Other dependencies were also important like,

sudo yum install postgresql-devel
