For some unknown reason, my SSH client will hang if I connect to a port-forwarded SSH server from inside the NAT network. If I SSH from outside the network (for example, from an EC2 instance) through the NAT router it works fine. If I SSH from one host inside the NAT network to the other it also works fine. If I SSH to the forwarded port 22 on the public or private address of the NAT router, then the SSH client will hang.

Host A (private: A.A.A.A): SSH Client
HOST B (private: B.B.B.B): SSH Server
EC2 Host (public: E.E.E.E): SSH Client
ROUTER (Public: R.R.R.R): NAT Router
ROUTER (private: r.r.r.r): NAT Router

Here's what I've discovered empirically

A.A.A.A -> B.B.B.B works
B.B.B.B -> A.A.A.A works
E.E.E.E -> R.R.R.R -> B.B.B.B works
A.A.A.A -> R.R.R.R -> B.B.B.B does not work
A.A.A.A -> r.r.r.r -> B.B.B.B does not work

The last message the SSH client emits before hanging is

This is actually pretty normal behavior for NAT. In order to get around this, a common practice is to use local DNS to force resolution to the private IP address, instead of the public one.

For example, Host B would have a public DNS record of R.R.R.R so the rest of the world can access it. But, if you change your local DNS (or /etc/hosts file on Host A) to force Host B's hostname to resolve to B.B.B.B, you could then address your server locally.

This method obviously only works if you use DNS, but it's a method I rely on a lot because of this NAT behavior. Besides, it doesn't make a lot of sense for requests to be hitting your router if you're connecting to a local resource, especially on a larger network.

  • My purpose for connecting is this manner was to test that the NAT was setup properly. It would have been convenient if I didn't need a host from outside the NAT network to perform this sort of testing. Thankfully I had the EC2 instance handy. – Huckle Feb 19 '17 at 9:27
