I am using archlinux and i3-wm. I have a laptop connected with an external monitor via HDMI. I use the following commands to toggle the screens:

From laptop to monitor (it takes 4.0sec):

xrandr --output HDMI1 --mode 1920x1080 --output LVDS1 --off

From monitor to laptop (it takes less than 0.5sec):

xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode 1600x900 --output HDMI1 --off

From monitor to laptop the change is almost instantaneous, but from the laptop to monitor it takes almost 10 times more time.
