I have a laptop with two gpus (Intel HD4600, Nvidia GTX850M) that's running Ubuntu together with Windows 10 (has no issues) using GRUB.

I have installed nvidia-355 and i have not installed bumblebee due to bad experiences (never got it working/it or me broke the install).

Problem:

Something display/graphics-related crashes when i have heavy graphical load, and i see a part of the boot messages flash by briefly, and i'm at the login screen again.

lscpi output listing both gpus

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 06)
01:00.0 3D controller: NVIDIA Corporation GM107M [GeForce GTX 850M] (rev a2)

dmesg output

This is repeated over and over for a hundred times.

I messed around with my xorg.conf this weekend, it looked like this before:

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "layout"
    Screen 0 "nvidia"
    Inactive "intel"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "intel"
    Driver "intel"

EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Device "nvidia"
    Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration" "on"
    Option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "CRT"
EndSection

Anything i tried to change was overwritten on the next boot or graphical login.
I added nogpumanager to my boot options and got Nvidia X Server Settings to generate this config for me:

# nvidia-settings: X configuration file generated by nvidia-settings

EndSection

Somehow it didn't get overwritten on boot.

What is causing the not-so-smooth experiences i have and how do i solve it?

Graphics drivers, driver configuration, and things-that-might-prevent-me-from-booting-to-gui are not my strong points, so i'm only willing to try things that i can recover from if things go wrong.

What i know:

  • Booting without the nogpumanager flag will restore my xorg.conf to defaults.
  • Using nvidia driver instead of nouveau will prevent booting to the gui.

Edit:

I tried to reproduce the problem¸but something else happened. With a coupl e of programs open, the gui froze on alt-tab and turned pitch black. Any sounds from the programs did not stop, and i was able to access the TTYs. I needed to restart lightdm to get back into the gui.

~/.xsession-errors (the full output, only two lines):

  • Sounds like X or your desktop environment is crashing. Anything in /var/log/Xorg.0.log, /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old, or ~/.xsession-errors (that last one would have to be from the CLI, before logging back in to the GUI, I'm afraid—you could just quickly cp it to somewhere from the CLI, then log in to the GUI and look at it from there.) In all those files, look from the bottom (end) for error messages. – derobert Sep 26 '16 at 15:32
