Any help please, I'm new to this and don't see where I'm going wrong.

  • such lines hurt the efficiency of apt, they do not hurt functionality, but they may indicate some other problem, – Jasen Jun 18 '16 at 9:44
  • Sorry, I dont follow, which lines are you referring to, could you explain further please, I would like to understand any indications of other problems, thanks – bob Jun 18 '16 at 10:59
  • duplicated sources lines, – Jasen Jun 18 '16 at 23:09

The line

deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free

in your /etc/apt/sources.list is a duplicate/extension of

deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ jessie main

Delete the shorter line.

At least in theory, there could be also more duplications with lines in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/* files.

  • /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ does not contain any files im assuming this is not a problem.. – bob Jun 18 '16 at 10:43
  • removing shorter line seems to have done it. Reading package lists ... Done – bob Jun 18 '16 at 10:44
  • Yes, it is not a problem, that there are no files in sources.list.d. I just wanted to mention it for completeness. – jofel Jun 18 '16 at 13:47
