Can I use RandR to display two different parts of the same screen twice, at different offsets, on one display?

The desired display is a Head-Mounted Display (HMD) that is normally used for 3D stereoscopic stuff. The aim is to show 2D desktop applications on the HMD, i.e. to use the HMD more like a flat display panel. The parts of the screen that are displayed will be broadly overlapping, but not identical, since the overlap in terms of what each eye sees is not perfect. These two views of the same screen would be positioned at appropriate offsets on the display so that each occupied half of the display (for example).

Despite breaking it down like that and staring at the xrandr manpage, I can't figure out how to achieve it.
