Can someone explain to me what are all the options available with the -la flags for the ls command ? I have read the man pages, but still not sure.

  • you want to know what does -la do with ls or something else ? – Pacifist Mar 24 '16 at 20:16
  • yea, what does -la do ? And is there any other options available with that ? – Jenna Maiz Mar 24 '16 at 20:23

I think the confusion here is that -la is perceived as a single option. It isn't: it's actually the -l and -a options coalesced into a single parameter. On that basis it's a reasonable question and IMO remains just about on-topic. (From review.) – roaima Mar 24 '16 at 21:59

From ls man pages:

   -a, --all
do not ignore entries starting with .
-l use a long listing format

If I were to do ls -a by itself:

ryan@docker-ubuntu:~/Docker/Enterprise_Portalv.2.5.1/mysql$ ls -a
. .. docker-compose.yml Dockerfile mysqlAddUser.sh .mysqlAddUser.sh.swp portal_csa_mysql.sql

If I were to do ls -l by itself:

ryan@docker-ubuntu:~/Docker/Enterprise_Portalv.2.5.1/mysql$ ls -l
total 60
-rw-rw-r-- 1 ryan ryan 377 Mar 16 09:43 docker-compose.yml
-rw-rw-r-- 1 ryan ryan 346 Mar 16 10:00 Dockerfile
-rwxrw-r-- 1 ryan ryan 446 Mar 16 10:13 mysqlAddUser.sh
-rwxr-xr-x 1 ryan ryan 48026 Jan 21 10:30 portal_csa_mysql.sql

Do you see the difference between using each flag?
