I’m running a linux server at home which is mostly a file and e-mail server and a digital video recorder. All the data goes on an ext4 partition on a software raid-6.

Every now and then (sometimes twice a day, sometimes twice a month) the whole server locks up. Sometimes I have a kernel report in the syslog which I cannot understand:

  • Your kernel is tainted (P - proprietary kernel module), which may make it more difficult to correctly diagnose your problem.

kernel BUG at fs/ext4/inode.c:2118!
invalid opcode: 0000 [#1] SMP

Appears to be an issue with the ext4 driver in your kernel.

Process mythbackend (pid: 27841, threadinfo ffff88004262a000, task ffff88007fb83330)

mythbackend is triggering it.

[<ffffffff811731df>] mpage_da_map_and_submit+0x2c6/0x2dc
[<ffffffff8117390a>] ext4_da_writepages+0x2d4/0x465

this is the frame stack; what syscalls were being made that led to this.

There's an open bug for Fedora 15 for this issue.

  • I am not sure if this bug is the same, since my crash occurs in line 2118 while the reported crash occurs in line 2188. Oct 11, 2011 at 7:15
  • Okay. now I know that some action of mythbackend causes an Oops in the ext4 driver. In inode.c:2118 one can see, that this will happen if some precondition is not matched. What can I do now? Oct 11, 2011 at 7:19
