I've been using Linux systems for years now and wanted to try Kali Linux as my next. I've been using Backtrack before as well and never experienced errors. However, I just installed Kali and boot up in terminal only mode. When I try startx, it goes black for some while, then displays

Oops! An error which couldn't be rescued was experienced. Please contact the system administrator.

(or something like this). When I do gdm3, it tells me

Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory

Some other stuff:

  • etc/rc.d doesn't exist.
  • I tried service start dbus, however it starts but seems like it exits immediately.
  • I also tried to install xfce and lightdm, when I enter lightdm then, I get a black screen.
