I'm presently using PPK file (public and private key pair) generated from putty to Login (password less) through ssh in Linux server and it is working well.

I am exploring possibility in using my Private key stored in USB Dongle(trust key) to do the same.

Please guide.

  • there's a debian package libpam-rsa , with description "poor man's smartcard" . also libpam-usb . – 把友情留在无盐 Feb 27 '15 at 4:25

there are options to use pluggable devices as credential , when logging in at console . however if we want the authentication device to be presented remotely , the server cannot verify it in an obvious manner .

however why not store the private key in a file and let ssh client read from it ?

  • The problem is that It(Private key) is now compulsorily being issued to USB dongle and not .pfx file by CA in India – r tanwar Feb 27 '15 at 9:54
