I was told, in order to just start the x window system, i have to input at the command line: sudo killall mdm. After having done so, my window freezes and i have no further controll, my only option so far is to switch the computer off. What should i do in order to be able to input the command: sudo X after having killed the display manager mdm ?

  • You should be able to switch to one of the other virtual terminals using Ctrl-Alt-Fn keys e.g. Ctrl-Alt-F1, Ctrl-Alt-F2 etc – steeldriver Feb 11 '15 at 22:08
  • i tried to switch to an other virtual terminal by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Fn, and in my despair a lot of other combinations, but i could not leafe the frozen desktop and ended in (initramfs). – Abdul Al Hazred Feb 11 '15 at 23:53
  • Perhaps it would be better to switch to and log in at one of the virtual terminals first and kill mdm from there - it's a bit cleaner than killing your display manager from inside a running display session. – steeldriver Feb 11 '15 at 23:58
