I have VMware virtual machine running Debian Wheezy. I have compiled my own kernel 3.14. I have noticed dmesg is flooded with messages pci BAR 7: can't assign io (size 0x1000).

I have no idea what these messages mean. The VM seems to be running OK, I don't see any problems. Nevertheless, I am bothered by these error messages, and I would be happy if I could get rid of them.

Could somebody please explain

How can I get rid of these logs?

They are not useful, and are just flooding my logs

    Looked into it a little bit and it looks like the error message is saying it can't allocate I/O buffers in memory for some device. Beyond that I'm not too sure what it means or what to do. I would probably cross-reference that PCI address listed in dmesg with those out of lspci to see if you can guess what the specific device is in the hopes that might push you further in the right direction. – Bratchley Feb 12 '15 at 19:20

  • Also, might be worth knowing if you get the error when you boot from a stock kernel. It might be a regression in the upstream kernel. Normally projects hold off on adopting a new kernel until it seems stable or they backport fixes to a particular kernel, it's possible that's what was lost here. If it is, you may just ignore it since it seems like it would only affect PCI devices coming from that particular root port. By the time it becomes an issue (probably from a HW change) you'll probably be on a later kernel. – Bratchley Feb 12 '15 at 19:37
  • @ Bratchley - I don't get these errors when I boot stock kernel 3.2. I could not find stock kernel 3.14 to try that one. Do you understand what these errors mean? What are these BARs ? – Martin Vegter Feb 12 '15 at 20:08

    The "BAR" thing is explained by the link in my first comment. Full name is "Base Address Register" which seems to be just the range of memory space the device uses to communicate with the rest of the system. – Bratchley Feb 12 '15 at 20:10

It appears to me as if you are experiencing a bug related to memory allocation for PCI bus data throughput, despite the fact you are running in a VM. While I am not familiar with VMWare, I suspect there may be a PCI emulation or memory allocation-related setting you could tweak to fix it.

The forum thread referenced at the end of this post suggests that a similar problem might be fixed by disabling ACPI, though I can't vouch for the accuracy of said thread.

I suspect (though I have no information to back this up, so take it with a grain of salt) that it may have something to do with the architecture you are emulating. If you're emulating 32 bit x86, I might suggest trying to emulate the 64 bit version of the same software, and testing if it occurs there too.

As for removing the log, I believe that can easily be done using dmesg -C, or perhaps (if you'd like to automate it) setting up a cron task to execute the aforementioned task every hour.

It is related to memory allocation for PCI bus data throughput. Please enable the Traffic Shaping option in the vSwitch throughthe vSphere Client.

I have tried this and works fine for me.
