I am using Arch Linux with httpd web server and webpage works ok. I had to add "Reboot" button on webpage and now I want to run a Perl CGI script, reboot.cgi, which so far only contains "Hello world" message:

#!/usr/bin/perl

print "Content-type: text/html\n\n";

print <<"EOF";
<HTML>

<HEAD>
<TITLE>Hello, world!</TITLE>
</HEAD>

<BODY>
<H1>Hello, world!</H1>
</BODY>

</HTML>
EOF

Now, if I press this "Reboot" button, my script does not get executed, but instead I get upper code shown in browser. I've installed mod_perl via pacman -S mod_perl and enabled it in httpd.conf file:

# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/access_log"
# with ServerRoot set to "/usr/local/apache2" will be interpreted by the
# server as "/usr/local/apache2/logs/access_log", whereas "/logs/access_log"
# will be interpreted as '/logs/access_log'.

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path. If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to specify a local disk on the
# Mutex directive, if file-based mutexes are used. If you wish to share the
# same ServerRoot for multiple httpd daemons, you will need to change at
# least PidFile.
#
ServerRoot "/etc/httpd"

#
# Mutex: Allows you to set the mutex mechanism and mutex file directory
# for individual mutexes, or change the global defaults
#
# Uncomment and change the directory if mutexes are file-based and the default
# mutex file directory is not on a local disk or is not appropriate for some
# other reason.
#
# Mutex default:/run/httpd

#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
# directive.
#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
# prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses.
#
#Listen 12.34.56.78:80
Listen 80

What am I missing that code DOES NOT gets executed?

  • Can you tell use what HTTP error code comes back from Apache? A 404, a 500, or a 302 or even something weirder? – Bruce Ediger Jan 11 '15 at 0:45
  • By what URL do you try to access the reboot.cgi script? You've got a Listen 80 directive, which seems weird, but also seems to work on my Arch laptop. Tell us the entire URL, including the "http://" part. – Bruce Ediger Jan 11 '15 at 1:09

You haven't informed apache when to use the mod_perl extension.

Add the following:

AddHandler perl-script .pl .cgi

to your config instead of the cgi-script handler. Also see How do I make Apache handle .pl (Perl) files, using mod_perl?

  • I hace added this line to httpd.conf, restarted apache via systemctl restart httpd && systemctl status -l httpd, apache restarted, but still does not work. – KernelPanic Jan 9 '15 at 13:57

First turn up logging level. Change the "LogLevel" directive to LogLevel debug. Use systemctl to stop/start httpd.

Mark the perl script executable with chmod ugo+x whatever

Next, change the script a little. You need a "blank line" between headers and body:

print "Content-type: text/html\r\n";
print "\r\n";

Note that each line in the headers is supposed to end with carriage-return/newline.

You have the directory /srv/http/cgi-bin/ as the CGI-BIN directory. Put the perl file there, then try requesting it again. If you have telnet or netcat, sometimes it's worth it to manually type in the HTTP request and see what the headers say if/when they come back.

Look in /var/log/httpd/error_log to see what Apache says about the problem.

  • I did that, no result, in /var/log/httpd/error_log there are no errors, and I've set `LogLevel debug', scripts still does not get executed. – KernelPanic Jan 10 '15 at 7:34

    @MarkoFrelih - is the reboot.cgi script marked executable? Is it located in the CGI-BIN directory, which I think is /srv/http/cgi-bin/? Is that directory readable and executable by the "http" user ID? – Bruce Ediger Jan 11 '15 at 1:07
  • the script is markede executable, it is located in cgi-bin directory and that directory is readable and executable by http user ID. – KernelPanic Jan 11 '15 at 3:24
  • @MarkoFrelih - update your question to add HTTP error code that you get when invoking the Perl script from your browser, and also cut-n-paste the entire URL you use to invoke it. Does the /var/log/http/access_log file show that Apache even received the URL? I think you might not even be asking for the script correctly. – Bruce Ediger Jan 11 '15 at 17:01
  • I've fixed it, check my own answer. – KernelPanic Jan 13 '15 at 21:25

I've solved the problem: I FORGOT TO uncomment LoadModule cgi_module modules/mod_cgi.so directive in httpd.conf.
