A very similar question has probably been asked many times, e.g. http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/99350/how-to-insert-text-before-the-first-line-of-a-fileHow to insert text before the first line of a file?

But all those solutions add a tab, then a line return to the beginning of the file. I want to add just a tab to the start of the first line.. how to do that??

Thanks very much

Add a tab character to beginning of a file without a line return
